Workshop Title:  Enhancing Clinical Competence in Military Culture and Terminology: Preparation for Inclusion on STAR Behavioral Health Providers Registry

Workshop Description:

With regard to urgent mental health needs facing our returning veterans, clinicians in the community could add much to the landscape of treatment options available to this population. However, even seasoned clinicians may have little background in working with U.S. service members and veterans, and the role of military cultural competence is as critical as any other form of cultural competence in working effectively across demographic divides. This workshop represents the first tier of three, preparing clinicians to treat military and veteran populations effectively. The workshop will address concerns of different groups of service members, including female and LGBTQ individuals.

Learning Objectives

  1. To discuss demographic and risk characteristics of military and veteran personnel and their families.
  2. To recognize general and deployment-related military terms.
  3. To demonstrate how specific aspects of military life may influence service members’ willingness to engage in treatment.
  4. To recognize common difficulties service members encounter during transition from military to civilian life.
  5. To describe general and deployment-related stressors for military families, and discuss specific skills to promote healthy adjustment for families throughout the deployment cycle.
