Full Title: Mindfulness-Based Biofeedback: Clinical Applications in Pain and Complex Medical Problems

This symposium covers the fundamental principles of merging two sciences into a clinical practice modality, Mindfulness-Based Biofeedback (MBB). Individuals with complex medical diagnoses experience fluctuating physical and emotional needs which educationally-focused models integrating mind-body medicine best address. We didactically and experientially examine how these modalities lead to effective coping. Emphasis is placed treating psychophysiological sequelae in diverse populations such as those with pain, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and PTSD, and unique considerations with veterans.

CE Hours: 3

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define Mindfulness- Based Biofeedback (MBB) and provide two examples of the benefits of its use with medically complex patients.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss special considerations in assessing appropriateness for MBB application and identify two contraindications for the use of the program.
  3. Participants will be able to identify two key components of a model for incorporating MBB into a group therapy treatment.
About the Presenter:

Dr. Urszula Klich is a clinical psychologist with nearly 20 years of clinical experience, much of which involves complex medical populations. During her extensive work with pain patients, she has cultivated a treatment philosophy of integrative medicine focused on fostering each individual's healing power to improve physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Through specialized techniques she has developed, such as Mindfulness-Based Biofeedback, she helps individuals cope with challenges ranging from everyday stress and anxiety to catastrophic injuries and serious illness.

At Shepherd Center, she has witnessed the tremendous pain management benefits that the approach has yielded for patients with catastrophic injuries and neurologic, musculo-skeletal, and degenerative disease, such as spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and complex regional pain syndrome. Her focus is on restoring function, improving quality of life, and reducing medication dependence. She is committed to helping people bridge the gap between their current way of living and their potential.
