This workshop will address frequently asked questions about the ethical importance of thorough documentation. The presenter will use case examples and inspire lively discussions about such topics as the APA Record-Keeping Guidelines, what needs to be in a client's chart, the use of a solid Informed Consent and Collateral Informed Consent to Treatment, recently added (2013) HIPAA requirements, the HIPAA Business Associate Contract, maintaining email and text correspondence, retention of records, the protocol involved in showing a client his/her records, and much more. Diversity issues will also be considered throughout the workshop.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Utilize the APA Record-Keeping Guidelines and discuss what must be in a chart, disclosure to clients regarding where & how charts are stored, retention of records, and appropriate ways to go over a chart with a client if appropriate
  2. Summarize new HIPAA Requirements as of September 2013
  3. Describe the importance of a solid Informed Consent and Collateral Informed Consent to Treatment as well as including a technology statement to address social media, telephone, text, and email usage.
  4. Explain the HIPAA Business Associate Contract as well as the importance of a solid Contract between Psychologists practicing together.
  5. Discuss the importance of utilizing ICD-10 diagnostic codes starting Oct. 1, 2015.

    About the Presenter: 

    Dr. Becky Beaton has been a regularly featured psychologist on TLC's "Hoarding: Buried Alive" and she has made recent appearances on the Anderson Cooper Show, Good Morning America, and CNN Headline News. She has served on the Georgia Psychological Association’s Ethics Committee for several years, and she has been the Committee Chair for the past year. She has also been an adjunct professor for both Emory and Georgia State Universities. Additionally, Dr. Beaton is the Founder and Director of The Anxiety & Stress Management Institute in Atlanta, and she has taught numerous workshops both nationally and internationally.

    Cancellation Policy:
    Registrants must cancel through Amy Dietrich only via email or phone (contacting other staff members/leadership does not guarantee your cancellation.) No faxes or mail cancellations will be accepted.
    Cancellation Fee: $35
    Refunds will not be given for cancellations within five (5) business days prior to the workshop date.
