Managing disruptions in our lives is one of the most important elements in maintaining personal effectiveness. We must expend mental energy (to unlearn old ways and learn new ones), emotional energy (to work with feelings and reactions), and physical energy (to engage in new behaviors). Researchers have identified a set of “change muscles” that help people use their adaptation energy more effectively. This program will both enable participants to understand their own resilience and to explore practical applications of resilience when coaching and counseling clients through life transitions and behavioral change. It has applications for both clinical and I/O psychologists.
- Describe the importance of resilience in both positive and negative change.
- Discuss the characteristics of resilience and how they work together.
- Complete an in-session Personal Resilience self-rating questionnaire to assess one's own resilience.
- Apply the resilience characteristics, i.e., “change muscles”, and practice how to strengthen them.
- Discuss applications of resilience to coaching and consulting interventions.
