GPA Diversity Dialogue: Book Discussion

Chamique Holdsclaw

Breaking Through: Beating the Odds Shot after Shot

Join us as we discuss an inspiring personal story about Chamique Holdsclaw, No. 1 pick of the WNBA in 1999 and current outspoken mental health advocate.  Our discussion will focus on Chamique’s recounting of her childhood growing up in the projects of New York and young adulthood playing basketball for Tennessee and the WNBA. Her memoir speaks to the power of nurturing supports, faith, basketball, and courage and how these factors helped her thrive and navigate adversity, challenges, and overwhelming pressure during her youth.

Discussion will explore additional cultural and mental health themes throughout the book, including mental health and addiction struggles of her parents, community norms related to mental illness, and, as discussed in the last few chapters of the book, her own battle with mental illness.

Light refreshments and bagels will be provided.

Feel free to bring a friend.
