GPA Member Susan C. Litton, PhD Launches PSYBooks®, a practice management system created specifically for mental health professionals
Dr. Susan Litton began working on PSYBooks over five years ago. She initially became interested in the web/mental health connection in 1995 when she was a volunteer chat host for a channel on America Online called Online Psych. Her duties expanded, Online Psych was purchased by iVillage.com, and eventually Susan was hired by iVillage as the Sr. Community Producer for their entire Health channel.
Although Susan enjoyed her job as Sr. Community Producer, she found herself increasingly interested in the nuts and bolts of the Internet. She remembers being given the tour of iVillage’s main office in New York City. When meeting the technology department (the people who made it work) Susan thought, “I want to do that!” A few moments later, when the tour progressed to the graphics department (the people who made it pretty) Susan thought, “I want to do that!”
Unfortunately, iVillage met with troubled time and Susan was eventually laid off. However, with the money she had earned during her two-year stint there, she decided to go back to school. While maintaining her private practice in clinical psychology, she enrolled in the Web Design and Development program of the Art Institute of Atlanta – a degree program designed to teach both things she wanted to learn: how to make the web work AND how to make it pretty.
Around the time she needed an idea for her Senior Project, Dr. Litton began experiencing some frustration with the practice management system she was using with her own clients. Having come from a family of do-it-yourself(ers), Susan decided to build a prototype for a new Electronic Health Records (EHRs) for mental health professionals as her Senior Project. After graduating, Susan continued to work on the EHR, which she named PSYBooks, determined to make it as intuitive and feature-rich as she possibly could. After over a year and a half of using it with her own clients as she continued to refine and improve it, Susan is now is pleased to be able to offer PSYBooks as a subscription service to other mental health professionals.
