Workshop Title: Mindfulness for Veterans

 

Workshop Description:

This workshop will address the following factors in mindfulness practice as it relates to the veteran population:

  1. Participants will list and describe benefits of mindfulness for veterans and the relevant supporting research.
  2. Participants will be able to summarize the cultural factors to take into consideration when teaching mindfulness with veterans.
  3. Participants will discuss what adaptations may be helpful for common clinical conditions within the veteran population (e.g., tinnitus, chronic pain, PTSD, depression).
  4. Participants will demonstrate practical considerations for teaching specific mindfulness practices (e.g., body scan, mindfulness of breath, walking meditation, loving-kindness meditation) with veterans.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to list and describe the benefits of mindfulness for veterans.
  2. Participants will be able to explain possible adaptations of mindfulness teaching for the veteran population.
  3. They will be able to describe what military cultural factors may affect mindfulness practice.
  4. They will be able to discuss what adaptations may be necessary for the general veteran population.
  5. They will be able to discuss what adaptations may be necessary for sub-populations within the veteran population (e.g., veterans with tinnitus, PTSD, or chronic pain).
  6. Participants will practice experiential mindfulness, e.g., grounding, body scan, and mindfulness of breathing.

      About the Presenter:

       

      Sharon Shatil is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in sleep disorders at the Atlanta VA Health System Sleep Clinic. She has presented at both regional and national conferences including the Midwestern Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy. She is a national consultant for the national VA Evidence Based Practices training programs in individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).   She has had a mindfulness practice for the last 12 years and has been teaching mindfulness to Veterans for 4 years. She is completed the VA CALM training, mindfulness teacher certification program, through the National VA Evidence Based Practices Program.

       

      Maggie Johnson is a clinical psychologist in the Health Psychology Clinic at the Atlanta VA Medical Center where she provides behavioral health interventions to veterans coping with chronic illness, cardiovascular disease and chronic pain. She also participates as a team member in the Atlanta VA’s cardiac rehabilitation program, where she assists veterans in making healthy lifestyle changes, reducing their risk factors and stress management. She has presented at national conferences including the American Psychological Association and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. She has specialized skills in leading mindfulness-based groups for veterans coping with chronic health conditions. She has had a mindfulness practice for the past 10 years and has been teaching mindfulness with veterans for 4 years.

      Must be logged into member profile to receive member rate.

      *If a GPA Student Member needs continuing education credits, he/she will need to pay the higher GPA Member fee regardless of status as a student.

      Cancellation Policy:
      All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Hannah Steinberg via email (admin@gapsychology.org). A $35 cancellation fee will be charged for any cancellations prior to September 11, 2020. No refunds will be given after September 11, 2020.
