Workshop Title: Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs): An Evidence-Based Approach to Assessment and Treatment

Workshop Description:

Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors are “repetitive self-grooming behaviors in which pulling, picking, biting, or scraping of the hair, skin, or nails result in damage to the body.” Although BFRBs occur in 2-5% of the population, many professionals lack current information about the best practices for treatment. This workshop will discuss diagnostic issues surrounding BFRBs, emphasizing DSM-5 criteria and differential diagnosis of conditions such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder and OCD. A summary of evidence-based treatments will be provided, and case examples will be used to demonstrate the functional analysis of hair-pulling and skin picking within adult and child populations with and without co-occurring disorders.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss diagnostic criteria for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) including hair-pulling and skin-picking.
  2. Summarize evidence-based treatments for BFRBs and current best practices for psychologists.
  3. Demonstrate functional analysis of and treatment planning around BFRBs using the Comprehensive Behavioral Model
