Workshop Title: Resilience in Diverse Early Career Psychologists: Challenges in the Future of the Profession


Workshop Description: 

For new psychologists, entering the profession can be a daunting, challenging and demanding experience. As the new face of the profession, it is imperative to navigate these challenges while delivering psychological services to the public. Resilience can be an important factor in early career psychologists’(ECPs’) success and well being, however, ECPs’ experiences as they enter the workforce are impacted by cultural, social and geographical factors. Diverse ECPs (e.g. of different races/ethnicities, genders, ages, and/or sexual minorities, socioeconomic statuses, national origins) face personal and professional issues that intersect with their cultural identities and values. This workshop will examine how this intersectionality impacts diverse ECPs in various settings (e.g. academic, private practice, government). We will describe how levels of resilience are impacted by ECPs’ career environments. This workshop will also explore how a group of diverse ECPs utilize various resilience strategies in each of these settings and adjust to their respective positions.    

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe unique cultural, social and geographical factors that impact diverse ECPs as they enter the workforce. 

  2. Discuss how professional and personal issues intersect with their cultural identities and values in a variety of work settings (e.g. academia, government, private practice).

  3. Demonstrate how diverse ECPs implement resilience strategies in their respective settings while delivering psychological services to the public.

      About the Presenters:

      Dr. Rachel Ammirati is a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Ammirati received her BA in human development in 2004 from Cornell University, and her PhD in clinical psychology in 2013 from Emory University. Prior to joining Emory’s faculty, she worked as a psychologist in primary care at the Atlanta VA. Currently, she is based clinically at Grady Health System’s Infectious Disease Program and provided clinical services to HIV+ adults. She specializes in providing and supervising cognitive behavioral psychotherapy and values science-based practice. In addition to providing clinical services, her interests include teaching/supervision, behavioral health integration with medical care, HIV-related behavioral health services, brief and transdiagnostic models of psychotherapy, and cognitive biases.



      Dr. Neha Khorana is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Mercer University School of Medicine where she is involved in the clinical teaching of medical students & psychiatry residents, conducting consults at the local hospital and seeing individual therapy patients in an outpatient setting. Moreover, Dr. Khorana is the founding Director of Wellness for the medical school and is responsible for developing and implementing multifaceted Wellness programs and activities for all students on the four Mercer campuses. As the Chair for the Georgia Psychological Association Early Career Psychologists (ECP) Committee, Dr. Khorana advocates for ECPs and trainees.


      Dr. Krystal Frieson-Bonaparte is a clinical psychologist in the Substance Abuse Treatment Program at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Health Care System in Decatur, GA.  She is the Chair of the Diversity Education Committee for Psychology Training (DEC-PT).  Dr. Frieson Bonaparte received her BS in Psychology from the University of Georgia and received her MS, EdS, PhD in Counseling Psychology and a MPH in Health Behavior from the University of Kentucky (UK).  Her pursuits in attaining dual degrees was a way amalgamate her training in counseling psychology with public health science to address the overall health and wellbeing of individuals, groups, communities, and populations.  Dr. Frieson Bonaparte completed her predoctoral internship at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University, School of Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics at the Grady Infectious Disease Program.  Her clinical and research interests focus on the biopsychosocial health issues of oppressed, marginalized, and underserved populations along with an emphasis in health behavior, substance use, and HIV/AIDS/STD treatment, education, and prevention.  She would specifically like to focus her efforts towards marginalized groups and aid in exploring and addressing the inequities of health disparities that surround these groups. 


      Dr. Michelle Casimir is a licensed psychologist with the Atlanta VA and an Assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine. Her primary focus is on providing evidenced based treatments to individuals who present with severe mental illness, trauma and personality disorders. She serves on several committees including the Atlanta VA Psychology Training Committee, Atlanta VA Family Intervention Team, the Emory Outpatient Psychotherapy Training Program and the Emory Faculty Development Committee. Dr. Casimir has been trained in several evidenced-based treatments including CBT for Schizophrenia, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Behavioral Family Therapy for Serious Psychiatric Disorders (BFT) and Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR). She is a strong advocate for mental health issues and is a member of Emory’s Atlanta Behavioral Health Advocates (ABHA). Dr. Casimir is the former Chair of GPA's Early Career Psychologist Committee and helped to create the Georgia Psychological Association for Graduate Students (GPAGS), which is devoted to the development of future leaders in the profession of psychology.


      Dr. Latasha Woods received her Doctoral Degree in School Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. She is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a licensed psychologist specializing in diagnosing and treating individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Dr. Woods completed a predoctoral internship at the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, Georgia and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development in Durham, NC. While at Duke, she provided clinical services to children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 18 months to 21 years) and participated on a research team exploring the efficacy of umbilical cord blood for improving outcomes of children with autism. Prior to becoming a licensed psychologist, Dr. Woods was employed as a school psychologist and teacher for 14 years in school districts located in North Carolina, Virginia, and Louisiana. Her clinical and research interests involve early detection of autism spectrum disorder and parent-mediated interventions.


      Dr. Sanjay Shah completed a joint psychology and law program through Drexel University’s Clinical Psychology program and Villanova University’s School of Law.  His primary concentration at Drexel was in forensic psychology. After receiving his doctorate degree in 2013, Dr. Shah completed a year of post-doctoral training in forensic psychology with the Psychiatry and Law Service at Emory. He has been in private practice since 2015 where he focuses on both forensic and clinical work. Dr. Shah conducts forensic evaluations with the Forensic Special Group in Marietta where he is mainly involved in criminal and family law cases. In addition, Dr. Shah has a clinical practice where he focuses on psychotherapy psychological testing with both children and adults.
