Workshop Title: Pain Psychology in Integrative Healthcare: What Works

Workshop Description:

Pain psychology was initially defined in the American Psychologist very recently (2019).  Pain psychology focuses on the nature and assessment of pain as well as the use of evidenced-based interventions to decrease pain, usually within integrative healthcare specialty practices (10,000+ potentially in the USA). At a thriving pain management practice based in multiple clinics in Georgia, this presenter and his physician/NP partners now use PMODESS (pain, medications, obesity, distress, evaluations, sleep, and smoking) as the behavioral health approach. Challenges, successes, and details about the process of integration within the practice over the past three years will be presented.  (Intermediate)

Learning Objectives:

  1. List the three core competencies in pain psychology.
  2. Describe 4 of the 7 interventions used in the Georgia Pain and Spine Care behavioral health program, including the medications and mood management elements.
  3. Define “healthy obsession” and describe how that attitude can facilitate improvements in managing pain, moods and weight.

      CE Hours: 3
