Best Practices in the Assessment, Diagnosis, & Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders

CE Hours: 6

Workshop Description:

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) impact multiple areas of functioning, demanding a multidisciplinary approach to conceptualization, diagnosis, and intervention. With the prevalence of ASD on the rise, accurate early detection, assessment, and diagnosis is critical. This workshop will help practitioners identify, assess, and diagnose symptoms of ASD from infancy through young adulthood using a comprehensive developmental approach to evaluation, focusing on state of the art measures and standards of best practice in the field. It will also discuss how the use of biomarkers can assist in the diagnostic process. The afternoon session will then focus on translating results from comprehensive evaluations into best practices for treatment and intervention. (Intermediate)

Learning Objectives:

1.  Recognize the key features of Autism Spectrum Disorder
2.  Discuss racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in diagnostic ascertainment and assessment
3.  Demonstrate best practices in diagnostic assessment procedures for ASD
4.  Identify common diagnostic differentials and overlapping symptomatology between ASD and related disorders
5.  Discuss evidenced-based practices for treatment and intervention
6.  Identify appropriate treatment and intervention strategies based on individual profiles
