Dr. Mayra Ortiz: My Perspective on GPA's Town Hall Meetings

GPA town hall meetings offer us an opportunity to explore a variety of topics and concerns. We are the voices and we all can learn from each other. Differences are part of any group and organization, but in embracing different ideas and point of views, we enrich each other and the group.

The subject of our last town hall meeting was Diversity and Racial Justice.  Our discussion generated a lengthy and intellectual discussion. It opened windows for clarification and growth. While we all know that this is a very sensitive issue that has raised so much turmoil, I have learned that we are all valuable within our differences. Every one of us, without exception, has our unique story and has overcome our own challenges. The purpose of the meeting was to hear and validate each and everyone’s personal experiences and realities, with respect and dignity.

Ultimately, the goal is to support, learn from, and inspire one another. We want a GPA that is strong and a greater resource to each one of its members and non-members. Pat Wadors said, “When we listen and celebrate what is both common and different, we become a wiser, more inclusive, and a better organization.”
