Workshop Title: Documenting “Medical Necessity” for a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Young Children

Workshop Description: 

This workshop will take an in-depth look into documenting a request for approval of a diagnostic assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Specific reasons why ASD is suspected and why further diagnostic evaluation is warranted will be reviewed. The role of referral reason and pre-existing evidence will be discussed. An important step in the diagnostic evaluation is documenting reasons for conducting the full evaluation so an insurance payer can approve the evaluation content as “medically necessary”. Presenters will go over red flags and use of validated screening tools to substantiate the need for a full evaluation. The group will discuss concepts behind the DSM-5 criteria for ASD and detail the content of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Participants will discuss practical examples of how to apply information prior to and during an evaluation to the rating of the DSM criteria for ASD. 

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the rationale for practical use of validated autism and other development screening tools to substantiate the need for a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. 
  2. Demonstrate ways in which information can be documented in requests for authorization for a diagnostic evaluation for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 
  3. Discuss the content of a comprehensive ASD diagnostic evaluation.
  4. Detail the specific DSM-5 criteria and how evidence for these criteria are determined. 
  5. Describe and show how this information can be used to develop a developmental profile of the person`s current social communication and interaction and behavioral profile.

      About the Presenter:

      Dr. Rice is a Developmental Psychologist and the Director of the Emory Autism Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral  Sciences at Emory University. She has worked with people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through teaching, diagnostic assessment, program planning, consultation, training, and research for over 25 years and led the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) multi-state autism prevalence project for over 10 years. She is a licensed Psychologist in the state of Georgia and conducts specialized training on the assessment of autism.

      Dr. Morrier is a doctoral level board certified behavior analyst and the Director of Screening and Assessment at the Emory Autism Center, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University. He has worked with families and individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for the past 27 years as an early interventionist, diagnostician, and researcher, as well as a program developer, consultant to agencies and families both nationally and internationally. Since 1999, he has worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network as a clinical reviewer to assist with determining ASD prevalence in Georgia. Dr. Morrier has received extensive training on the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, and has reached research reliability with Dr. Catherine Lord on both instruments.
