Recorded CE: Misophonia and the Neurophysiology of Emotion: Developmental and Systemic Factors Towards Ameliorative and Ethical Intervention Approaches
Pre-recorded webinar, CE: 3 Hours
Workshop Description:
Misophonia is an auditory sensitivity disorder characterized by a strong involuntary affective response to specific sounds, activities, and situations. Literally meaning “hatred of sounds”, this condition typically entails intense anger and/or anxiety
in response to hearing others eat, drink, chew, and even breathe. The inescapable nature of these sounds and situations in everyday life can frequently result in misophonia becoming debilitating for academic, social, and family functioning. While
little is still known about its underlying mechanisms, this presentation will provide an overview of the current research and will include a detailed summary of case studies involving three successful treatments. (Intermediate)
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to define and differentiate Misophonia from other auditory and affective disorders based on emerging diagnostic criteria.
2. Participants will be able to assess developmental, systemic, and physiological factors
relevant to the presence of powerful negative emotions in the clinical incidence of misophonia.
3. Participants will be able to apply developmentally-focused psychological interventions towards the amelioration of misophonia.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Benjamin Greenberg is a licensed psychologist in the state of Georgia. As a clinical researcher, he has presented worldwide as an expert on disorders that have intersecting audiological and psychological factors including tinnitus, hyperacusis,
and misophonia. Having designed and validated psychometric scales for hyperacusis and tinnitus exacerbated by exposure to sound, he also recently gave a positively reviewed presentation on tinnitus for the Georgia Psychology Association. Having received
an NIH grant to present ant the American Auditory Society in 2015, other notable invitations have included the World Congress of Audiology in Vancouver, BC, the Tinnitus Research Initiative in Taipei, Taiwan, and the Global Hyperacusis Masterclass
in London, UK.
