Matthew Kridel, Ph.D. Workshop Description: Functional neurological disorders (FNDs) are estimated to be the second most common reason for outpatient neurology visits and to have financial and quality of life burdens comparable to other neurological disorders. Though the name of the disorder has changed – from hysteria and conversion – beliefs and attitudes towards FND and the patients who suffer from it have not; many patients report significant experiences of stigma from social networks and healthcare providers. This workshop will bring participants through the history of FND to modern research on treatment and conceptualization, aiming to increase the number of knowledgeable providers for patients within Georgia. (Introductory) Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to: - Describe the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria for functional neurological disorder (FND) and compare it to diagnostic criteria in the ICD-11 and previous editions of the DSM.
- Discuss the impacts of stigma and disease burden on patients living with FND, especially patients from minoritized groups.
- Conceptualize FND from several different theoretical models including psychodynamic, learning theory, somatic, and integrative models.
- Identify and apply resources for treating patients with FND, including treatment manuals.
