Entangled: Eating Disorders, Trauma, and the Case for Transdiagnostic Treatment

On-Demand Workshop

CE: 3 Hours

Presenter:

Laura Minch McLain, PsyD, BC-TMH

Workshop Description:

Eating disorders and trauma are often entangled, thus necessitating concurrent treatment focusing on shared maintenance factors. By targeting experiential avoidance, clinicians can guide clients to recovery, connection, and sustainable change. This workshop will explore the benefits of treating eating disorders and trauma through an emotion-focused transdiagnostic approach, The Renfrew Unified Treatment ModelĀ®, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. Attendees will learn how the eating disorder functions as a protective and self-regulating response, while helping clients build tolerance to their emotions and reducing eating disorder symptoms. This presentation will provide a case example that highlights themes of safety, esteem, trust, control, and intimacy.

(Intermediate)

Learning Objectives:

  1. At the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to list three examples of experiential avoidance strategies commonly used by individuals with co-occurring eating disorders and trauma.
  2. At the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to describe two benefits of using a transdiagnostic approach to treat co-occurring eating disorders and trauma.
  3. At the end of this workshop, the participant will be able to identify at least three main themes addressed in Cognitive Processing Therapy.
