The Treatment of Dissociation: Reviving a Much-Needed Skillset

On-Demand Workshop

CE: 3 Hours

Presenter:

Lynn Mary Karjala, PhD

Workshop Description:

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is an amazing and creative adaptation to trauma — and deeply rewarding to treat. Yet patients report difficulty finding therapists who feel comfortable with their diagnosis, and it seems there are fewer and fewer psychologists trained and experienced in DID treatment. In this presentation, participants will gain a fresh perspective for conceptualizing the dissociative disorders, along with a delineation of clear guidelines for effective treatment and pitfalls to avoid, as further informed by polyvagal theory. By demystifying DID, the aim is to pique curiosity in this challenging, rewarding field and increase practitioners’ confidence to explore it further.

(Intermediate)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the three phases of trauma treatment.
  2. Describe the current status, including challenges, of empirical support for polyvagal theory.
  3. Name the three levels of response to threat described by polyvagal theory.
  4. Describe the major feature that distinguishes DID from DDNOS.
  5. Describe two pitfalls to avoid for effective treatment of DID.
