Workshop Description:

The purpose of this workshop will be to discuss ethical challenges posed by technology and social media for both clients and clinicians. This workshop will review ethical decision-making related to technology and social media. Through a series of case studies, workshop participants will explore ethical pitfalls and offer solutions to ethical dilemmas related to technology. These dilemmas will range from clinicians use of technology when providing psychological services to risks of social and digital media to clients' mental health. The presentation will draw from the recent Surgeon General's Social Media Advisory and discuss
implications for practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify ethical pitfalls that exist in using social and digital media when practicing psychology, particularly in the areas of informed consent, confidentiality.
  2. Implement ethical decision-making models to resolve ethical dilemmas related to use of technology in their practice.
  3. Describe the mental health risks associated with use of social and digital media, particularly for children and teens.

About the Presenters:

 

Dr. Amy Todey is a psychologist in independent practice in Atlanta. Dr. Todey completed her Ph.D. at the University of Georgia. She completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, including Cambridge Health Alliance and Boston Children’s Hospital. She has advanced training in child custody evaluation and parent coordination from William James college in Boston. Dr. Todey specializes in neurodevelopmental evaluation of children and adolescents, coparenting, and high conflict divorce psychology. She has presented locally on issues related to ethics, telepsychology, coparenting, and divorce psychology, and nationally on clinical issues in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Dr. Todey has served on the GPA ethics committee since 2021 and is the current education chair.

Dr. Emily Mouilso is a licensed psychologist in Georgia and board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. Since 2015, she has been employed at the University of Georgia as a Clinical-track faculty member in the department of psychology. She worked as the Director of the Psychology Clinic from 2015 -2021 and 2024 to present. She supervises graduate students in assessment and treatment of adult outpatient clients in the Psychology Clinic and teaches graduate and undergraduate-level courses in clinical psychology, adult intervention with a focus on evidence-based treatment, ethics, and supervision. Dr. Mouilso also serves on the GPA Ethics Committee and the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee. In 2022 she was named a fellow of GPA. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology specialty Board of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and she also serves as an APA Site Visitor and is a member of the UGA Diversity Advisory Council.

 Dr. Gift McDougal is a licensed psychologist whose clinical experience centers around children and adolescents and perinatal mental health. Dr. McDougal is a behavioral health provider at a healthcare facility. She also runs a private practice where she serves children and adolescents as well as women who need additional support during their pregnancy or the postpartum period. Dr. McDougal was born in Nigeria and raised in the state of Georgia. She is an alumna of the University of Georgia where she received her bachelor’s degrees in both Psychology and Criminal Justice. She then moved to Colorado and went on to receive her M.A. in Forensic Psychology and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. Dr. McDougal is certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) by Postpartum Support International (PSI). She is a member of the National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists (NBCCH) and has served on the Ethics Committee for Georgia Psychological Association since 2021.
 Tomina J. Schwenke, PhD, ABPP, is a licensed and board-certified psychologist with a post-doctoral juris master’s degree from Emory School of Law. She is a nationally certified sign language interpreter (CI/CT), with a specialized certificate in mental health interpreting (QMHI). She is an Assistant Professor at the Emory School of Medicine. She served as the director of Emory’s jail-based Competency Restoration program and is the forensic psychology training director for the Emory Psychiatry and Law Service. She holds the clinical distinction of Senior Psychologist within the Emory Clinic where she provides therapy to a variety of patients including those who are D/deaf and hard-of-hearing. She was previously in private practice and was a forensic evaluator for the State of Georgia, DBHDD. Early in her career she provided services in sign language to families at the Foundling Hospital as well as the Lexington School and Lexington Center for the Deaf. She was awarded the Richard Morrel Community Commitment Award (Emory), the Martin Seligman Research in Psychology and Deafness Award (ADARA), Outstanding Journal Article Award (JADARA), the Dennis Brady Service Award (CUNY), and the Excellence in Patient Care Award (Emory Healthcare).
 Nancy McGarrah, PhD is has been a licensed psychologist in Georgia since 1984,after receiving her doctorate from Emory University in 1983. She works with children and their families including evaluation, therapy and court testimony. Her areas of specialization are child trauma and forensic psychology. She is a Fellow of the Georgia Psychological Association (GPA) and has served as President and Chaired the Ethics and Children’s Legal and Legislative Issues committees. She is also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA),and served on its Ethics Committee, including being Chair (2009-2010). Dr. McGarrah received the Karl Heiser Presidential Award from APA in 2000 for Advocacy on Behalf of Professional Psychology. She was the Georgia representative to the APA Council of Representatives (2013-2016) and currently is on the Board of Directors of the Division of Independent Practice of APA. She also was the recipient of the Power of Prevention Award in 2007 from Prevent Child Abuse Georgia. She has served on several Boards of community organizations, including the Methodist Children’s Home, Visions Anew, and Peter and Paul’s Place. She received a Presidential Citation in 2021 from the American Psychological Association, and a Mentoring Award in 2023 from the APA Division of Independent Practice. Dr. McGarrah speaks to numerous groups regarding abuse, trauma, divorce, child and family topics, media, and ethics. Dr. McGarrah has been an Adjunct Professor at Emory University and a Guest Lecturer at Emory Law School and Emory School of Medicine. She is in private practice with Cliff Valley Psychologists, which she co-founded in 1985.

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Sylvia Cardona via email (operations@gapsychology.org). A $35 cancellation fee will be retained for any cancellations prior to one week before the event. No refunds will be given within one week of the event.
