On-Demand Workshop

CE: 3 Hours

Presenters:

Erica Marshall Lee, PhD; Desiree Frain, PsyD and Sheethal D. Reddy, PhD

Workshop Description:

Body shaming is a pervasive social issue that involves criticizing or mocking individuals based on their physical appearance, often leading to emotional distress, low self-esteem, and long-term psychological harm. This presentation explores the origins of body shaming, its impact on mental health, and its prevalence across media, social platforms, and interpersonal interactions. Additionally, it examines how body shaming disproportionately affects marginalized groups, including women, racial minorities, and LGBTQ+ individuals. The presentation also highlights positive body image movements and strategies for
fostering self-acceptance, promoting inclusivity, and creating a culture of respect and diversity around body representation.

(Introductory)

Learning Objectives:

  1. **Understand the Impact of Body Shaming**: Participants will be able to identify the psychological, emotional, and social effects of body shaming on individuals, including its contribution to mental health issues like low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.
  2. **Recognize the Role of Media and Culture**: Attendees will explore how societal standards, media representation, and social media contribute to body shaming, reinforcing harmful beauty ideals and perpetuating body image dissatisfaction.
  3. **Promote Positive Body Image and Inclusivity**: Learners will gain strategies for combating body shaming, fostering self-acceptance, and supporting body-positive practices in personal, social, and professional environments.
