Eliciting Change Talk, Softening Sustain Talk 

Virtual Workshop | CE: 2 Hours

Workshop Description:

This intermediate workshop will expand Learner’s appreciation of how the words a practitioner uses can guide clients towards proactive change talk. Strategies for eliciting a client’s motivation for change will be explored, as will strategies for reducing sustain (i.e., maintaining status quo) talk. Learners should have prior knowledge of and experience with motivational interviewing (MI) as content provided will move beyond the basics to include more process-oriented application.

Level: Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify “sustain” talk and the ways in which it impairs change
  2. Describe strategies for moving clients towards “change” talk

About the Presenter:

 

Megan Benoit Ratcliff, PhD, MPH is a licensed clinical psychologist and behavioral
health consultant. She received her Masters in Public Health in Behavioral Science from Emory
University. She received her Doctorate from the University of Georgia with additional residency
and fellowship training at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital, Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She joined the Motivational
Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2014. She has facilitated trainings in Motivational
Interviewing for over ten years, with clients including United Way of Atlanta, Georgia
Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, and Children’s Healthcare of
Atlanta.


Cancellation Policy:

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Karen Carroll via email (operations@gapsychology.org). A $35 cancellation fee will be retained for any cancellations prior to one week before the event. No refunds will be given within one week of the event.
