Building Bridges: A Psychologist's Guide to School Collaboration

Virtual Workshop

CE: 3 Hours

Presenters:

Brandi Tanner, PhD, NCSP

Workshop Description:

Many families of children with disabilities seek support from psychologists through evaluations or
treatment services. Students with disabilities also often qualify for special education services through an
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or accommodations through a 504 Accommodation Plan. These plans
require specific paperwork to establish eligibility and to implement appropriate support. They also require
communication and collaboration with school teams for documentation and implementation. This
workshop will present a framework that describes how to share clinical information with school teams so
students with disability can receive the appropriate support.

(Introductory)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will describe the differences between IEPs and 504 accommodation plans.
  2. Participants will explain the differences between a diagnosis and eligibility for special education services.
  3. Participants will discuss ways to communicate clinical information to school teams to support their
    student clients.

Dr. Brandi Tanner is a licensed psychologist, Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP), and former special educator with over two decades of experience in her field. Dr. Tanner received elementary and special education degrees from West Virginia University and was awarded her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Florida.

Dr. Tanner worked in the public school setting for several years, which gave her specialized knowledge
regarding special education rules and procedures. She later transitioned into private practice, specializing in evaluations for children and adolescents.

Currently, Dr. Tanner uses her experience as a psychologist and educator to help IEP teams use clinical
information to develop appropriate accommodations and intervention programs for students with
