Beyond the Scale: Weight Bias and Clinical Practice

Workshop Description:

This workshop will explore implicit and explicit weight bias that clients with a body mass index (BMI) in the overweight/obese range often experience, broadly in society and more specifically in clinical practice. Attendees will be able to identify ways in which excess weight intersects with emotional wellbeing. Strategies for incorporating weight sensitivity into clinical practice will be explored and discussed. (Introductory) 

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify implicit and explicit bias faced by individuals with a body mass index (BMI) in the overweight/obese range
  2. Identify ways in which excess weight intersects with emotional wellbeing
  3. Summarize strategies to ensure weight-sensitivity in clinical practice including in the office setting (e.g., having chairs without arms), assessment, and intervention

 

About the Presenter:

Megan Benoit Ratcliff, PhD, MPH is a licensed clinical psychologist and behavioral health consultant. She received her doctorate at the University of Georgia with additional residency and fellowship training at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She has been an active member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2014. As a consultant, she facilitates motivational interviewing trainings throughout the year while also seeing patients in the Center for Weight Management at Northside Hospital Duluth.

Raj Parameswaran, LPC is a therapist and Behavioral Health Coordinator in the Center for Weight Management at Northside Hospital Duluth. She received her M.S. in Clinical Psychology at Augusta State University and completed an internship in the Georgia Health Sciences Health System. She facilitates weight-related sensitivity training for new hospital employees while seeing patients and conducting various support groups and classes for patients as they navigate their weight management journeys.
